Reed Purchasing
Currently, I order in bulk from Cascio Interstate Music, and prefer to get my accessories there. I also use Woodwind and Brasswind. Click on the company names to go to their websites.
Current prices through Cascio Interstate are listed below, but they do fluctuate throughout the year.
The Instrument is given on the left side, followed by the regular price for one box. The quantity is given as 10 or 25. The price we would pay is under Cost, and the actual cost "Per Single Reed" is given, to show you the discount.
Note: The Rico Royal is a different cut of reed, for a more advanced mouthpiece, and also the cane is a little harder. An Orange Box, Rico Reed, Strength 2.5 would take less embouchure strength and air flow to plan than a Blue Box, Rico Royal, Strength 2.5
Note: The largest box of Rico Royals are in boxes of 10.

Mouthpieces
Mr. Wilsons Recommendations, with approximate prices:
Recommendation #1 - TRY DIFFERENT MOUTHPIECES on your face!
Really, learn a song that you can play exactly the same over and over again. Try it on different mouthpieces and see what you like, and how they help you play. I have played on gold plated mouthpieces that cost over $160 ten years ago... and I didn't sound very good on them. Every student, face, instrument and combination is DIFFERENT! :)
There are many different factors that go into mouthpieces.
1st - What is it going to do for you? Help accentuate your strengths, or bolster your weak areas? Play higher, lower; Make articulation easier, crisper, longer?
2nd - Dimensions: Size, Shape, Cup Depth, Rim Width, Smoothness, Lay, Facing, Depth, etc.
3rd - How serious and dedicated are you? A $10-20 mouthpiece probably won't last you a long time, or help make you sound better. But... don't buy a $150 Alto Sax mouthpiece if you know you are switching to Tenor or Bari next year (and never looking back!).
There are a few tried and true mouthpieces - and many that offer you a great product that is inexpensive!
